PHILADELPHIA – It was a special reunion for members of the World Champion USA U19 women’s lacrosse team.
On Friday night at the Downtown Marriott, at the US Lacrosse National Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the US team players and coaches were presented with their gold medals for winning the FIL championship last August in Hannover, Germany.
The US women defeated Australia, 14-11, in a thrilling gold medal game. The US was forced to rally from a three-goal deficit after easily beating the Aussies, 20-7, just several days earlier. Team USA has won four straight World titles.
Fourteen of the 18 team members were present, including four Baltimore players: Notre Dame Prep’s Covie Stanwick (now a freshman at Boston College), C. Milton Wright’s Alyssa Blevins (UMBC), Winters Mill’s Erin McMunn (Princeton) and St. Mary’s Danielle Lazo (Louisville). Unable to attended were McDonogh School’s Jen Cook (Maryland) and Good Counsel’s Caleigh Sindall (North Carolina) and Brigid Smith (Duke).
The head coach also is a Baltimore native. Krystin Porcella, who starred at John Carroll and now coaches there after starring and coaching at Loyola College, said the players exceeded expectations on and off the field and credited her assistants for making the whole experience a success.
“The ring ceremony was absolutely everything I could imagine,” she said. “The best part about it was that 14 of the 18 girls are here. The most rewarding part is that we worked so hard for a year-and-a-half, and to bring it all to an end and see everyone one final time is a wonderful feeling.”
Besides Porcella, McMunn gave a heartwarming speech to the many supporters and parents in attendance on behalf of the players.
The girls gave these comments:
Stanwick: “When the speeches were being said, it helped you relive it again. It gives you chills just to think about how much fun it was and how great an experience it was and how we’ll remember it the rest of our lives.”
Blevins: “I had so much fun with everyone in Germany. It’s great to be able to see everyone again. I’ve been able to communicate with some people on Facebook, but this was really neat.”
McMunn: “It was so awesome to see everyone again. Like Alissa said, you try to keep up with people on Facebook, but it was awesome to get back together again and get the feeling.”
Lazo: “It’s been awesome. I can’t believe the fact it’s over now. But you think, ‘Wow, we really did it.” Being here with everyone and seeing all the support was awesome.”
