Gilman School, the defending MIAA champion, completed a perfect month of March by defeating Landon School, 10-4, tonight in the Kudda.com game of the Week.
Senior attackman Gordie Koerber scored four goals as the Greyhounds improved to 3-0.
“Landon is a tough opponent and we know they are going to give us everything we could handle and I was really proud of our boys and the way we came out,” said Gilman coach Brooks Matthews. “ They not only played smart they played tough and that’s a great win for us.”
Landon (3-3) had a tough time generating offense throughout the game as the Gilman defense contained the Bears shooters, helping the Greyhounds seize a 6-2 lead in the second period.
Senior goalie Alex Joyce (Georgetown signee) was a bright spot for Landon with 11 saves.
“Joyce is a great goalie,” Koerber said. “He is just a good left handed goalie.”
Jake Matthai added two goals and an assist for the Greyhounds while Max Greene, Harry McCarthy, Will McBride, and Chris Walsch all had goal each. Sophomore attackman Tyler Ruhl had an assist.
“(Will) McBride and Tyler (Ruhl) are playing great this year,” said Koerber about the younger players stepping up. “Peter Brown is getting ground balls between the lines and they playing great. I’m really proud of them. “
Gilman opens the month of April on Tuesday with a home game against Philadelphia powerhouse La Salle College High (3-0). Landon will look to rebound against St. Mary’s Annapolis.
Matthews knows these out of conference games go along way into getting ready for the grind that is the MIAA schedule. “Our focus is trying to win and attack the league, and teams like Landon give us a great opportunity to be ready when league play starts.”
