The No. 1 Salisbury University women’s lacrosse team is headed back to the NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse semifinals after a 13-6 win over No. 12 Catholic University of America Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. This will be the program’s eighth trip to the NCAA semifinals.

“We had a slower start today but we played the way we’re capable of playing … we played Salisbury lacrosse,” Salisbury Head Coach Jim Nestor said after the win. “Our defense did a great job today.”

Catholic, which entered the day scoring 15.90 goals per game (20th in the nation), was held by the Sea Gull defenders to its lowest scoring effort of the season.

Junior Katie Bollhorst led the Salisbury attack with a game-high seven points, netting four goals and dishing out three assists. With 12 points in the last two days, the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year moves into a tie for fourth with Jen Mezzadra on the program’s single-season points list with 117.

Catholic (16-6) jumped out to an early lead with a goal 2:31 into the contest by Mary Swarthout. Salisbury junior Kara Koolage answered back with an unassisted goal 14 seconds later to even the score at one apiece. Bollhorst scored her first goal of the game 3:20 later to give the Sea Gulls a lead they would not give up.

Sophomore goalie Ashton Wheatley stopped eight Cardinal shots to pick up the decision for the Sea Gulls (21-0).

“Ashton came up big today,” Nestor said. “We can always count on her.”

The Sea Gull defense kept Catholic off the scoreboard for a 23-minute stretch, spanning from 6:33 remaining in the first half until Swarthout stopped a 7-0 Salisbury run with 13:06 remaining in the contest. By that point, Salisbury had opened up a 10-4 lead and had the game under control.

Senior Allie Wheatley netted three goals in the contest for Salisbury, as did junior Lauren Feusahrens. The junior also added two assists in the game.

The Sea Gulls will next be in action this Saturday, May 19, in Montclair, N.J., at Montclair State University. Salisbury will play Middlebury College in the national semifinal contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the national championship game on Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m., against the winner of the other semifinal between State University of New York at Cortland and Trinity (Conn.) College.
