St. Peter & Paul raced to an 8-1 lead and held off a late challenge to defeat Friends Academy, 14-13, tonight t claim its first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship Friday night at Towson University.
St. Peter & Paul sophomore Casey Grieves scored all of his six goals in the first half. Matt Sovero added four goals and Cory Yoviene had two.
“The best thing about this is we came up from the C conference a couple years ago and the kids didn’t believe they could play at the next level, said SPP head coach Bud Lewis. “But once they start believing, look what happens.”
Peter McLaughlin won 16 of 30 face-offs, including one in the final seconds after Friends closed within 14-13.
“If you watched the game face-offs is where this game was won,’ said Lewis.
Jerry Sturmer had 10 saves for the win.
Friends began chipping away at the deficit, scoring three goals to close the first half down 8-4. The Quakers continued to rally in the second half, but never managed a tie.
Paul Orson and Dave Magdeburger each had three goals for Friends while Dan Warren and Cedric Charlier each had two goals.
