Registration is open for the Agnes Irwin Hounds Summer Lax Camp for girls in grades 3 through 9 June 18-22 and July 9-13 at Agnes Irwin School’s Memorial Field on Matson Ford Road in Radnor.
The instructors are former Loyola standout and Archbishop Carroll graduate Cara Filippelli and current Loyola All-American Marlee Paton, a native of Seaholme, Australia.
Paton led Loyola with 54 goals, 36 assists and 90 points, marking the second-best single-season point total in Loyola history. She was also named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and earned two of the league’s offensive player of the week honors this year.
Loyola wrapped up the year with a 14-6 record, including a school record 7-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Greyhounds won the BIG EAST title for the second year in a row and earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championships for a second-consecutive season. In first round action, Loyola topped Penn, 10-9, in overtime, before falling at No. 3 Maryland, 17-11, in the quarterfinals.
“I really wanted to do something big here with the sport we love,” said Paton. “We wanted to create something fun for kids and hopefully people appreciate it.
“We are fresh out of college so we are not too old. The main thing is to keep kids going throughout the summer, to ignite the love for the game. Even for me, during the break it’s tough to get motivated. But camps refresh and energize me to keep playing.
“We will be focusing on both midfielders and attack, as well as defense. We are both midfielders, and we know the field. We will be offering the whole package. It’s the kind of camp for everyone.
Paton said she is looking for kids – of any level – that want to experience the love of the game.
“Kids may know Loyola is a big-time program. We stress that you need to improve your stickwork by keeping your stick in your hands,” said Paton. “(Famed Loyola coach) Jen Adams always tell us you never put your stick away longer than a week. Players can practice 1 on 1 to hep their stickwork. We want kids to stay dedicated and have good fitness as well as a good attitude and willingness to learn. We like to see enthusiasm and hunger to learn.”
