Lacrosse world mourns loss of former Syracuse NCAA champion and local youth coach Schimoler, 50

Friends are invited to attend the Life Celebration today for former Syracuse NCAA champion and local youth lacrosse coach John Schimoler from 6 to 9 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Interment is private.

Schimoler, a member of Syracuse’s first NCAA Division I championship team in 1983 and longtime Mayo youth lacrosse coach, passed away in his sleep on Sunday at his Anne Arundel County home. He was 50 years old.

Schimoler grew up in Glen Head in Nassau County, N.Y. A member of the second midfield in his sophomore year, Schimoler contributed 12 goals and two assists when SU won its first national championship in 1983.

After he graduated from Syracuse with a major in marketing, he settled in Anne Arundel County.

He enjoyed fishing and loved animals.

John is survived by his wife, Jane E. Schimoler whom he married in 1988, his son, J. Gunnar Schimoler, and daughter, Heidi E. Schimoler, both of Edgewater; two brothers, Stephen Schimoler of Cleveland, OH and Paul Schimoler of Essex, VT; three sisters, Laura Reed of Lexington, KY, Mary Lou Cass of Denver, CO and Ellen Kelly of Fair Haven, NJ and many beloved nieces and nephews.
