The 2012 US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes event, featuring the U.S. women’s national team and top international and collegiate competition, will be held Oct. 3-7 in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University and nearby Burlingame (Calif.) High School. This year marks the first time the event has been held in the state of California.

The U.S. women’s national team will square off in a pair of contests against Australia in the first matchups between the world’s top two teams since 2009, when Team USA defeated Australia 8-7 to capture the gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. Team USA will also take on collegiate programs Cal and Stanford in weekend play in addition to holding several training sessions. The event marks one of the last times international teams will be able to come together for elite competition before the 2013 FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.

Stars & Stripes Weekend will be the first major competitive event for the 36-player 2012-14 U.S. women’s national team as it prepares for the 2013 FIL World Cup. The team will hold its first training weekend Sept. 7-9 at UMBC. Following a third training event (site TBA) in November, 24 players will be selected to advance with 18 spots and an alternate available on the 2013 FIL World Cup team. The final roster is expected to be announced in February 2013.

“The Stars & Stripes event will give us a good barometer of where our team stands heading into 2013 and the World Cup,” said Team USA Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We’re excited to bring international lacrosse to California for the first time. This is the strongest field ever assembled for this event, especially on the international side, and will give us a good evaluation of what we feel is a very strong group of players.”

The 2011 Stars & Stripes Weekend, held at Duke University, saw Team USA post a 4-0 mark, defeating North Carolina and Navy in two contests each by a combined score of 66-25. Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y./Syracuse ’09) led Team USA with 13 points (8 g, 5 a) on the weekend.

The U.S. women’s national team brings a number of California coaching ties to the event. Assistant Coach Amy Bokker and midfielder Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, Md./Johns Hopkins ’08) are the head and assistant coaches at Stanford, while attacker Lindsey Munday (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Northwestern ’06) and goalie Devon Wills (Denver, Colo./Dartmouth ’06) are the head and assistant coaches at USC.

In addition to competing in three days of games, the U.S. National Teams Program will host “An Evening with Team USA” Friday, Oct. 5 from 6:30-9 p.m. at La Honda Winery in Redwood City, Calif. This dinner event is a unique opportunity for local parents and daughters to get one-on-one access to Team USA players.

The full Stars & Stripes event schedule is expected to be released in mid-September. To learn more about the U.S. women’s national team program, including the roster for the 2012-14 U.S. women’s national team, visit
