TOWSON, Md. – Carson Dutkanych scored the game winner with under six minutes to play, lifting host Calvert Hall (MD) to a 13-12 thriller over St. Paul’s School (MD) Tuesday in an MIAA opener-game classic.

Dutkanych, a junior attackman who transferred from Park City, Utah, this winter, also had a key goal to tie the game, 10-10, after the Crusaders had taken the lead.

The loss was the first for the Crusaders (12-1), ranked No. 3 by Defending champion Calvert Hall (5-2) has won five straight games and is ranked No. 12.

Senior middie Stephen Kelly won 19 of 29 face-offs for the Cardinals and scooped 16 groundballs. Johnny Kelly added two goals and three assists.

“We’re feeling great,” said Stephen Kelly. “St. Paul’s has been clicking well. We knew it was going to be a dog fight.

“We played well in the last couple games and built some momentum. We had to fight through a lot of adversity throughout the game. Coming up w this ‘W’ gives us huge confidence.”

Kelly said the early losses helped the team to refocus.

“We a started out playing two great teams (Hill Academy, Gonzaga) and came up a little short,” he said. “It was a humbling experience and to be honest, it was the best thing that could happen to us.

“It got us refocused as a group. Going to down to Florida was huge as far as team bonding and staying together 24/7. It got us ready for this game and should get us ready for rest of season.

“This is a huge momentum win that we will keep carrying throughout the year.”

Mikey Wynne led St. Paul’s with four goals and an assist and B.J. Matheiss added three goals and two assists. Carter Flaig had two goals and an assist.
