Boys’ lacrosse: Gilman downs Loyola Blakefield to stay in 2nd place in MIAA

BALTIMORE – Host Gilman School (MD) used a balanced attack to gain a 13-10 victory Tuesday over Loyola-Blakefield (MD) in MIAA A Conference action, keeping the Greyhounds in a tie for second place with only three games left in the regular season.

Five different players – Max Greene, Chris Walsch, Chase Wittich, Peter Brown and William McBride – had two goals and an assist and Andrew Gemma had a goal and three assists to lead Gilman, ranked No. 8 by

The victory allowed the Greyhounds (11-2, 6-1) to maintain a tie for second place in the conference with McDonogh, which edged St. Paul’s, 11-10 in overtime.

Gilman built an 8-3 first-half lead.

Alex Roesner paced the Dons (10-6, 3-4) with three goals and an assist.

“Any time you get a win against Loyola it’s a great win,” said Gilman coach Brooks Matthews, whose team has won three stright since a 9-7 loss to No. 1 Boys’ Latin. “I was really pleased with this. I was pleased how we playe defensively. We were patient when we needed it. We pushed the tempo and had energy when we needed to push it and that helped us buinding momentum.

“I have been pleased with our maturity and focus during this stretch of home games.”

Thomas McBride saved six shots for the win in goal.

“I thought we came out fast, rode hard and cleared well all day,” said Thomas McBride. “We knew the tendencies of their attackmen and our defense knew their schemes so it was a good day.

“We really focus on groundballs when playing on this field. It’s a big advantage since we know it so well; and I think we got the majority.”
