Women’s recruits: Richmond adds three Baltimore players in Class of 2017

Second-year head coach Allison Evans welcomes seven newcomers to the 2013-14 roster. The Spiders graduated five seniors from last year’s squad.

“We are excited about our incoming class,” said Evans. “These seven women will give us added depth as we look to challenge for a conference title and push into the post-season. The success they have seen with their high school and club teams will help aid their transition to the college game. Our staff is eager for their arrival to campus and officially welcome them to the Spider family.”

Emily Castle • Attacker • Annapolis, Md./Annapolis
Castle was a four-year letterwinner and starter at Annapolis High School. The Annapolis, Md., native was a two-time First Team PIAA All Bicentennial League selection and was the leading scorer all four years. A four-year member of CCLAX Black club team, Castle also played for the Phantastix Purple in 2011.

Natalia Chaney • Midfield • Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s
Chaney was a two-year letterwinner on a team at St. Anthony’s that were four-time Catholic High School League Champions. Her squad was the top-ranked team in the state and No. 4 in the nation during the 2012 season. The Huntington Station, N.Y., native helped her team to a 2012 State Championship.

Leslie Espenschied • Defender • Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School
Espenschied was a four-year letterwinner at The Lovett School. A 2013 first team all-region and all-state selection, Espenschied captained her squad for two seasons as she was the leading scorer in the state of Georgia her senior season.

Haley Sutton • Attacker • Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron
Sutton was a three-year starter and letterwinner at Mount Hebron. The Ellicott City, Md., native led the squad in goals her senior season and was named to the 2012 First Team All-County squad. She is a two-time Academic All-American and was placed on the 2012 ESPN High School Watch List.

Devani Smith • Defender • Annapolis, Md./Broadneck
Smith was a four-year starter at Broadneck High School and captained the squad her senior season. The Annapolis, Md., native was selected to the All-Anne Arundel County second team as a junior and earned the Coach’s First Team Award her final campaign.

Melissa Teel • Defender • Milton, Ga./Milton
A four-year letterwinner at Milton High School, Teel captained her squad her final two seasons. The Milton, Ga., native was named to the 2013 First Team All-State and 2012 Second Team All-State squads. She was named the 2011 Midfielder of the Year and the 2013 Defender of the Year.

Kit Whiteman • Defender • Chatham, N.J./Chatham
Whiteman was a three-year starter at Chatham High School. The Chatham, N.J., native was tabbed the team’s Most Improved Player in 2011 and earned Honorable Mention All-County in 2013. She was placed on the ESPNHigh School Watch List in 2013.
