TOWSON, Md. – Shack Stanwick had four goals and an assist and Tal Bruno scored three times while Patrick Spencer added two goals and three assists as top-seeded and top-ranked Boys’ Latin advanced to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) title game Tuesday night by defeating McDonogh School, 16-10, at Towson University.

Boys’ Latin (17-0) shoots for the title Friday night against tonight’s St. Paul’s School, which edged Gilman, 9-8.Jack-Pezzulla

The Lakers raced to a 9-4 halftime lead, but McDonogh fought back to pull within three goals three times in the second half before BL finally pulled away.

The win gives Boys’ Latin another shot at an undefeated season. Last year the Lakers were stunned by Loyola Blakefield in the finals after going through the entire season as the undefeated No. 1 team in North America.

“It feels incredible, we played our hearts out,” said BL sophomore goalie Jack Pezzulla, who had 10 saves. “McDonogh played incredible.

“I can’t ask for a better game and a better environment to play in.”

BL coach Bob Shrives credited his team for rising to the challenge.

“We got a lot of good players and they showed up today,” he said. “I’m excited for them.
“They get an opportunity to play one more game.”

Robert Clark (2g, 2a), Bobby Austin (2g, 1a), Trey McGee (2g) and Jackson Morrill (2g) led McDonogh.

“It was an incredibly special year; a group of guys that represented all that is right about McDonogh and I am proud of them,” said Eagles coach Andy Hilgartner. “It was a tough game against a great opponent.

“It was a hole to dig out of. I was proud of our guys the way we came out in the second half and continued to battle.

“The combination of their face-off guy, Hunter Moreland, and their offense is tough. That offense is pretty special and we knew that.”
