TOWSON, Md. – St. Paul’s School used a 5-1 run in the second half and rallied to defeat Gilman School, 9-8, Tuesday night in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) semifinals at Towson University.

The second-seeded Crusaders (13-6) advance to meet top-seeded and undefeated Boys’ Latin Friday night at Towson at 8 p.m.

Gilman (11-7) led, 4-3, at halftime and then seized a 5-3 lead on a goal by Andy Matthews (two goals, three assists) to open the third period. But then the Crusaders took over as Henry Riehl (three goals) and Mitch Gordon tied it before the third quarter ended.

Riehl then scored two goals in a 42-second span to give St Paul’s a 7-5 lead with 11:07 left Tyler Ruhl (two goals, two assists) pulled Gilman within a goal twice, but Mikey Wynne (two goals) made it 9-7 to negate a late goal by Andrew Gemma.

“It was a great win, a gutty win.,” said St. Paul’s coach Rick Brocato. “Both are senior groups so we knew it would be a grind-it-out type of game with two teams playing toe to toe.

“It’s about survival and moving on. We were committed that this was not our last time together.”

St. Paul’s got some key saves from AJ Barretto (13 stops) and strong defense all night.

“AJ made some big saves at the end of the game,” said Wynne. “He stepped up as usual.

“We are usually down by four, give or six goals at halftime and it was only one goal this time – that’s easy. We like to stay in it and keep on battling and try to win it in the fourth period.”

How does it feel to know you get to play Boys’ Latin in the finals?

“This is a game you dream of,” said Wynne.

Chase Wittich led Gilman with three goals and an assist.
