The third time was the double charm for Saints Peter & Paul.

The Sabres defeated Archbishop Curley, 14-12, to win the MIAA B Conference lacrosse championship at Towson University’s Unitas Stadium Friday.

Casey Grieves had four goals and an assist for Saints Peter & Paul (16-5 overall), and Matt Sovero finished with a hat trick. Salisbury University-bound midfielder Garrett Reynolds led all scorers with six goals for Archbishop Curley.

The Sabres scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter, paving the way to their third straight league title. The eastern shore program avenged a pair of overtime losses to Curley during the regular season.

“We knew we were teetering on the edge of victory. We watched a lot of film and worked on some key issues,” said Sabres coach Bud Lewis. “These teams are so even it came down to who wants the ground ball more.”

After being doubled up in the first half, 21-10, the Sabres won the battle in the fourth quarter, 12-5, helping the way to six scores. Trailing 10-8, Grieves opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, followed by an unassisted score from Sovero.

Grieves broke a 10-10 deadlock with another unassisted goal. Curley got to within 12-11 on a goal from Matt Pezzella, but Grieves answered with his fourth unassisted score with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left.

“They started out man-to-man [defense] and I couldn’t get going,” said Grieves. “They went to a zone and we handled it.”

During the regular season, Curley won 14-13 in overtime in Baltimore and 10-9 in double overtime nearly two weeks ago. Matt Pezzella added three goals for the Friars.

C Conference – Indian Creek 20, Beth TFiloh 10

Ryan Baukhages had five goals and five assists and Nicholas Harbachewski finished with five goals, leading Indian Creek School to a 20-10 victory over Beth Tfiloh in the MIAA C Conference title match at Towson University.

The Eagles led by as many as 12 goals, completing a perfect season (15-0). Indian Creek took no time, claiming a 6-2 lead after opening quarter.

The Eagles pushed the lead to 9-4 halftime after Baukhages assisted scores by Brandon Blonder and Harbachewski. Indian Creek ran off five unanswered goals, capped by Baukhages’ final two scores of the afternoon, for a 20-8 advantage with 3 minutes, 16 seconds left in regulation.

“After the MIAA moved up our three biggest competitors, we really thought we could do something special,” said Baukhages. “It really sparked everyone’s offseason.”

Blonder added four goals and two assists and Robert McGurrin recorded a hat trick. Beth Tfiloh received a five-goal performance from Matt Kasner.
