MVP Mikey Wynne (St. Paul’s/Notre Dame) had four goals, including the game-winner 49 seconds into sudden victory overtime, to lead the South to a 17-16 victory over the North Saturday in the Under Armour Senior All-American game at Towson University.

“It’s great to represent the South, it was a bunch of awesome players and to get the ‘W’ was great,” said Wynne. “(Scoring the game-winner) is awesome, but I have to give it to my teammates.

“Shack (Stanwick, of Boys’ Latin-MD) is the one who put it on my stick. All I did was catch it and score. These guys are All-Americans and they always put it on your stick.”

The South trailed, 9-2, at one point in the first half before the South kicked it into gear to forge a 15-15 tie. The north’s Tyler Breen (Taft School-CT, Virginia) put the North ahead, 16-15, but the South forced overtime on a goal by Brendan Collins (Georgetown Prep-MD, Notre Dame) with 1:28 left in regulation.

Charlie Horning Jr (Georgetown Prep-MD, Villanova) added three goals and an assist for the South while Justin Anderson (Centennial-NV, North Carolina) added three goals for the South. Defensively, Greg Pelton (Malvern Prep-PA, Duke) had 10 groundballs and a caused turnover and LSM Peter Welch (Delbarton-NJ, Duke) had nine groundballs and three caused turnovers as well as the tying goal to make it 15-15.

“Playing on the biggest stage in high school lacrosse is definitely an unreal experience and I am really pumped up about it,” said Welch. ‘It’s always great to end on a winning note. High school was great and I am really excited moving forward in the future.”

Sam Bonafede (Chaminade-NY, Princeton) had five goals and 10 groundballs for the North while Connor Fields (Bishop Timon-NY, Albany) added three goals. North goalie Tommy Heidt (Brunswick School-CT, Michigan) set an Under Armour record with 13 saves.

“It’s definitely a nice way to culminate a high school career, but I realize like everybody here it’s only a beginning,” Bonafede said. “You only get better playing in college. Tonight’s a starting point, but the real work starts now.

“You’ll play against these guys for the next four years. The competition is pretty special. These guys are equally talented and equally smart and I am sure I will see them down the road.”
